Isolation exercises have been the norm for years. You still see it in the gyms every day, guys picking up a dumbell or straight bar with a weight that is obviously too heavy to move with any sense of correct technique.

The new wave of muscle breakdown and growth is variable cyclic training. Variable cyclic training uses a variety of movements that dosen't concentrate on isolating a specific muscle group.

As I said above, most over load and over train their biceps and triceps too. Most of the exercises you perform utilize your arms. For instance bench pressing uses the triceps. When you do rows for the back you are using the Biceps.
